“Why Church?” – February 2nd, 2025

Feb 3, 2025

Rev. Sophia preaching, with Charlyn Bethell and Guy Urban.

Nothing that happens at church is business as usual. No ministry exists here that isn’t serving a higher mission. Let’s reflect on why our church and Unitarian Universalist faith matters, and how all that we do within these walls is oriented towards spiritual deepening, sacred refuge and, yes, healing the world. Your presence is a gift to our community–bring your tender and blessed whole selves to worship this Sunday so that you might lean on the Love that is here. See you on Sunday!

Our reading today comes from Rev. Dr. Rebecca Ann Parker, one of Unitarian Universalists’ most celebrated leaders. Rev. Rebecca is a theologian, author, and the former President of Starr King School for the Ministry.

“In the Midst of a World”

In the midst of a world
marked by tragedy and beauty
there must be those
who bear witness
against unnecessary destruction
and who, with faith,
rise and lead
in freedom,
with grace and power.

There must be those who
speak honestly
and do not avoid seeing
what must be seen
of sorrow and outrage,
or tenderness,
and wonder.

There must be those whose
grief troubles the water
while their voices sing
and speak
refreshed worlds.

There must be those
whose exuberance
rises with lovely energy
that articulates
earth’s joys.
