Weekly Reflection – Parish Committee, February 24th, 2023

Feb 24, 2023

Greetings from the Parish Committee

One area of reflection at our last quarterly Parish Council meeting was thinking about how we live our shared ministry through participation in committee work.  We raised questions for reflection as we make decisions about our engagement in church activities.

  • Am I staying on a particular committee for fear of no one else stepping up?
  • Does the activity mesh with my personality type, skill set, and leadership style?
  • How is my current stage of life and my interests reflected in the activities that I participate in?
  • How does my participation enrich my spiritual growth as well as the lives of others?

Reflecting on my own volunteer experiences at FPW provided some interesting perspective on how my committee work has shifted over the years as I’ve changed and grown.  Starting with supporting the RE program, then co-chairing the Green Sanctuary Committee, serving on Worship Committee, chairing Social Action Committee, and now participating on Parish Committee – what a rich and vibrant experience I have had!  Doing a FPW volunteer “autobiography” can provide insight into our relationship with ourselves and with FPW.

The Parish Committee has also been reflecting on how “No is as Sacred as Yes” – Chapter 3 in Serving with Grace by Erik Wikstrom. We all are practicing discernment as we consider these and other questions, explore the meaning of shared ministry and make choices that support ourselves and each other.  Whether you’ve never served on a committee and are now thinking about it, or you’ve served before and are looking for your next step, there is a place for your gifts and we welcome you. And please remember to attend the Committee Fair after the service on March 12 to learn more about all the wonderful opportunities at FPW.
