The title, “The View from Here”, is something I borrowed from a colleague of mine who has used it in her church’s newsletter for several decades. It’s a great header, and a good reminder about what the ministry requires–a regular taking in of that wide, broad view. The theory of Adaptive Leadership, which many clergy adhere to, teaches that effective leaders know how to boogie down on the dance floor with those they serve and, with regularity, step away and get up on the balcony to take in and (with hopefully some semblance of wisdom!) reflect back the bigger picture.
Your stories and gifts; hopes, hindrances, needs, and particularities–when put together, weave a truly magnificent tapestry! It’s this tapestry that I try to see when I climb up to the balcony. It tells a story about who this church is, who the new and seasoned weavers are, where it needs repair or attention, and where it finds itself expanding in its vibrancy. Changes in leadership structure, policies, or bylaws; an interior redesign or updates to our building; how we continue to reckon with our complicated history and prepare for Watertown’s 400th Anniversary or be a force for justice and liberation in our community; expanding this church’s staff and ministries, supporting our families, or investing in those who have yet to come–these are just a few examples of what I see emerging and expanding here.
And taking the broader view is an exercise for you too! We are closing out our stewardship season, which asks all of us to get up on that balcony and see how the unfolding story and needs of this community meets the unfolding story and needs of the world…and to boldly and generously invest in its good dream and need. You really are the stewards of it all, and I hope you take great pride in this.
Our month’s theme of Paying Attention invites us to stand at these different angles and see what new vistas might be whispering to us–personally and as a church community. It’s a blessing to catch the good View from Here at FPW, to boogie down with you, and to know this community as some of the best dancing and adventuring companions I can think of.
With gratitude for the tapestry we weave together,
Rev. Sophia
