I am making a bold statement that “music helps us pay attention.” If I am trying to remember something important, I sometimes put that content into a melody and it then stays with me. And then, there is the issue of what we choose to pay attention to.
I am humbled by our musical community, how diverse it is, and how much we have to celebrate with the people that join together, creating this community. On March 8th, during Music Sunday, we will pay attention to music and role it plays in our lives. We will highlight the ministry that now encompasses many groups and individuals within the First Parish community. Together, we will share and partner with the congregation as we sing what will be the closing hymn, Crowded Table: “I want a house with a crowded table and a place by the fire for everyone. Let us take on the world while we’re young and able and bring us back together when the day is done.”
I have heard about singing at protests in Minneapolis, in Burlington MA, in Watertown Square, where I hope they are singing, and one coming to City Hall in Boston on March 11th. Like the protests of the Civil Rights movement from the 1960’s, our voices raised together have made a significant difference in turning the tide toward justice and equity when it is most needed. The strength of many, as when singing together, make our resolve heard in a way that could not happen from us as individuals. People pay attention when many bring a song to the protest. I say, “AMEN.”
