Greetings and thanks to one another as people.
Our month’s worship theme is Interdependence, and this April, Unitarian Universalists all over – that means us – celebrate the shared value of Interdependence. The proposed revision for that principle reads:
“We honor the interdependent web of all existence. With reverence for the great web of life and with humility, we acknowledge our place in it.”
We can make Interdependence a call to collective action on combating the scourges of climate change brought on by overconsumption of fossil fuels. Yes, individual efforts in everyday life can make a difference. We can feel healthier by walking more. We can reduce waste by bringing our own travel mug to the coffee shop. We can save money by shopping at thrift stores. However, to bring about structural change, particularly when it comes to the existential threat of plastics pollution, we need to work in solidarity to assert our Interdependence.
This month the Green Sanctuary Committee is sponsoring many events to celebrate our Interdependence:
- Sunday, April 14: Social Hour, take part in a “Spring Cleaning” Clothing & Gift Exchange. Bring things to swap with fellow parishioners.
- Saturday, April 20: The 25th Annual Charles River Cleanup. The Green Sanctuary Committee is partnering with Watertown Citizens for Peace, Justice & the Environment to clean the area of the river behind Stop & Shop, 700 Pleasant St., Watertown. There will be plenty of trash for everyone!
- Sunday, April 21: Social Hour, Green Sanctuary is hosting a Visible Mending Workshop. Bring clothing items in need of refreshing. Discarded textiles, especially in the name of “Fast Fashion,” contribute greatly to the solid waste problem. Visible Mending offers one solution to keeping clothes out of landfills.
- April 23, Evening Vespers at 7pm: Find solace in the contemplation of Interdependence with Green Sanctuary member Ian Evans leading service, and music inspired by the world of Nature.
