The beginning of the year is a time to re-assess and set some goals.  These goals give shape to our work and help us keep priorities in mind as we confront the issues and tasks of Governance.  This year, the Parish Committee goal is to take a wider view of our church by thinking about the systems that allow this community to work well together and to keep our property and resources well cared for.  During this interim period we will be asking whether “the way we’ve always done things” makes sense.  We will also be working to make sure we take good care of our resources, including our building, the parsonage and our human resources – our wonderful staff.

Apart from governance, much of our ministry to one another is planned through committee work.  For instance, the Worship committee helps make our Sunday services effective and smoothly run, the Fellowship committee helps to plan ways in which we can support and get to know one another better, the Social Action committee works on ways we can be true to our values in the wider community.  There are 10 program committees working in various ways to carry out our church’s mission.   One of the Parish Committee’s goals is to help committees to communicate with one another and be more closely aligned in our efforts.   To this end, the Parish Council (one representative from each committee) met at the end of October.  In preparation for our Search for a settled minister, we are going to be working closely with Wendy to learn more about who we are and what we want as a congregation.  To this end, we have two church-wide goals for this year.

  • One is to revisit our Mission to make sure it fully reflects our vision for First Parish. Starting with committees, the work and discussions will spread out to include the entire congregation in re-affirming this Mission.  Our current Mission Statement can be found on the About Us page on the website.  Take a look.
  • We will also be taking a look at the health of this community and continue to make sure that everyone feels included and welcomed and that we are living our values and communicating them to the outside community.
