Committee Spotlight: Buildings & Grounds – November 3, 2023

Nov 3, 2023

Hello First Parish Friends,

We’re excited to share a few of our accomplishments over the past months, as well as some  goals and projects for the year to come. Because newsletter space is limited, we include only the highlights of our activities. Please let us know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions!

  • With encouragement from the Green Sanctuary Committee, and the commitment of our amazing sexton, Nathan, we are now using only battery-powered lawn mowers and hedge trimmers at both the Meeting House and the Parsonage. This means all groundskeeping work except for our major spring clean-up is free from gasoline.
  • Nathan (who loves gardening) has planted and nurtured may seasonal flowers throughout the church grounds.
  • Two ailing pines have been removed from the playground.
  • The parsonage has had paint work to keep it looking at its best.
  • Samantha’s office received a new coat of paint before she moved in.
  • Our elevator has been serviced, and has passed its state inspection. We anticipate another upgrade soon.
  • We’ve been working closely with the Welcoming Building Team, and have moved a number of historical objects to safety out of the building.
  • We are now working to enhance physical accessibility in certain areas, including stairways, the handicap bathroom, and the outside wheelchair ramp.
  • We plan to upgrade our fire detection system soon.
  • A new section of fencing has been added to the edge of the parking lot. We also plan to repair the retaining wall below it.
  • In concert with the Interfaith Power and Light organization, we are exploring the viability of installing solar panels to provide the church’s electrical needs. Please stay tuned for more on this as the project develops.
